This blog will honor a 20th century Christian martyr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. His life and writings are invaluable to a disciple of Christ in this day. His steadfastness, courage, sense of responsibility and resistance in his time is a testament to what believer's can learn to glean our courage, and keep us firm in our stand for Christ in the battles we face now in our season of spiritual warfare. As I watch events unfold in this country and the world, I see us coming to a time when like Bonhoeffer, we will be faced with the same obstacles, violence, chaos, and crisis. With sadness, I also see a multitude of people who profess to be Christians who won't even acknowledge the reality of the problems we face, no more than they did in Bonhoeffer's day. When push comes to shuve, a lot of people are going to be going with the tide of godlessness, and those who make the laws, and have the influence to control people's lives. Those who stand against that tide are going to be in Bonhoeffer's situation-having to make very unpopular decisions and facing the results of it. Saying this, I know most will not hear it or care, until it happens. The ones I feel the greatest contempt for in this day are the prosperity preachers and teachers. The pillow prophets and moneychangers are in abundance. When a crisis comes, what they've taught the people following them will give them nothing to hold them in faith as it comes. Real faith isn't hinged on gaining wealth in this world-it's in letting it go, and following the Master-wherever it may lead. I'm not against having prosperity, it's hinging so much importance on it that is wrong. When these people have lost their riches and wealth, and houses and lands-will Jesus be enough for them. I pray He is. Below are some excerpts and quotes, along with some links to articles that go deeper into the details of his life. Well worth the time to read and study. Dietrich Bonhoeffer (German: [ˈdiːtʁɪç ˈboːnhœfɐ]; 4 February 1906 – 9 April 1945) was a German pastor, theologian, anti-Nazi dissident, and key founding member of the Confessing Church. His writings on Christianity's role in the secular world have become widely influential, and his book The Cost of Discipleship has been described as a modern classic.[1] Apart from his theological writings, Bonhoeffer was known for his staunch resistance to Nazi dictatorship, including vocal opposition to Hitler's euthanasia program and genocidal persecution of the Jews.[2] He was arrested in April 1943 by the Gestapo and imprisoned at Tegel prison for one and a half years. Later, he was transferred to a Nazi concentration camp. After being accused of being associated with the July 20 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, he was quickly tried, along with other accused plotters, including former members of the Abwehr (the German Military Intelligence Office), and then executed by hanging on 9 April 1945 as the Nazi regime was collapsing. Source: Wikipedia Bonhoeffer quotes: "The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." "If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction." "The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children." "We must learn to regard people less in light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer." "Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility." "Only he who believes is obedient and only he who is obedient believes." "One act of obedience is better than one hundred sermons." "A god who let us prove his existence would be an idol." "God's truth judges created things out of love, and Satan's truth judges them out of envy and hatred." "To endure the cross is not tragedy; it is the suffering which is the fruit of an exclusive allegiance to Jesus Christ." No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me,
saith the LORD. Isa 54:17 Rev 12:11
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. The Victory of Our Faith
For whatsoever
is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 1Jn 5:4-5 But they that wait
upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isa 40:31 Our Warfare
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2Cor 10:3-5 The Whole Armor
of God Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Eph 6:10-18 The Prayer Room
